Google Play. The iTunes alternative.
It's pretty interesting how Google is running this show.
If you're an artist and don't yet have a Google Play Artist account, I suggest getting on it.
Apparently from what I've figured out there won't be any other Alexander James' now that I've "claimed" it.
What does this mean for the artists of Google Play? Well, exclusivity, the power of Google backing you through their search features, and no competition form other "wanna-be's"!
Unlike iTunes or Amazon where you search for, let's say, Alex James and get a handful of guys hawking their cd's, and then have to sift through them to find the one you're looking for, Google Play is making it a first-come-first-serve "domain" style service.
That's great for those on the ball and claiming their artist name, but certainly bad for the others not acutely aware of which way the on-line wind is blowing. As for the indi-artist that happens to have the same name as a major label act, well, looks like they offered those spots to them first.
I suggest rebranding. Maybe a band name for one person, like Aqualung or The New Radicals. Both were in essence one person.
Anyway, Google Play certainly will draw some sort of crowd but it will be interesting to see whether or not it can stand up there next to Goliath.
Cheers!
