Pictured below is the new mind bending technology from Melodyne, the Direct Note Access, or DNA, polyphonic tuning software. The best way I can attempt to illustrate how important this new technology is to use the analogy of trying to remove the sugar from a brownie after it's been baked.
What this software does is take any polyphonic mono waveform (any recorded sound with multiple notes in it) analyzes it and breaks it into its constituent parts so you can retune any one or more parts of the waveform. Until now the only technology known to be able to attempt such a feat was the human ear. It would be like hearing your best friend's voice in a crowd of people all talking at once. We could hear our friend, but a computer couldn't. No longer is this the case!
Now when a musician lays down a track, be it a guitar, piano or any other polyphonic instrument, there's an ability to strip open the recorded sound and correct any one note gone wrong.
I can't say I have the faintest clue as to what type of algorithm(s) would be needed to achieve this, but I can say I'm ecstatic to see this type of progress!
I've often thought of what leaps in technology I'd see throughout the course of my life, and it amazes me to no end to know I'm living through, and am involved in utilizing these leaps now.
