If anyone out there has a Mac Pro and decides they want to try running 3 monitors off of it, buyer beware!!!
Just a quick word to the wise...
Allow me to set the scene.
PREFACE:
In my studio I like to track vocals alone. It's a thing.
ACT 1:
It's a hassle walking in and out of the vocal booth to make quick edits or what-have-you so I thought, "Wouldn't it be great if I had a monitor in here and used my wireless mouse and keyboard in here to do everything I've been doing out there?" Hence, I needed to purchase another monitor and figure out a way to run it from a graphics card with only two DVI ports. Hmmm. Quite the conundrum!
I'll skip the trials and tribulations and move along to our story's zenith saving any disparagement for all parties involved.
ACT 2:
You'll need this... Multi-View II USB 2.0 to DVI Video Adapter
What you DON'T need... ANY upgrade cards! Here's the kicker, after much frustration and trips all over town returning what I thought would be the salvation from the winter of my discontent (if ANYONE gets that reference I want to speak with you) I learned the dirty truth.
ACT 3:
The $450 2010 ATI Radeon 5870 or $250 5770 won't run 3 monitors! Don't be fooled my friends! Even the newest Mac towers with the newest graphic card upgrade will be of no use to you! You will be left with what you started with, a deep pit of angst at the idea of technological inadequacy.
The fact is, those cards overload and end up turning off all but two ports as soon as you plug more than two monitors into them, even though they tantalize you with all those beautifully longing ports.
DVI, Mini dvi, HDMI, OH MY!
Oh and good luck trying to install more than one card if you plan to use the other two PCIe ports on the motherboard! No such luck chief! That's prime real estate in there and those cards are double-deckers!
CONCLUSION:
Don't believe the ruse, the hype, the facade, the hoax, the sham, or the shenanigans!
Enough said.
I'm going to bed. I have to return a graphics card in the morning.
